Can Goksal

I was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, and then moved to study molecular biology at UC Berkeley for undergrad. There I worked in the Hallatschek Lab on studying biofilm evolution, which fostered my interest in the evolutionary landscape of genetics and regulation. Many PCRs later I found myself at UCSF looking to get more research experience before those grueling PhD years.I am working on the yeast molecular biology side of the lab because yeast is awesome! Currently, I am characterizing the function and evolution of the HP1 homolog in fission yeast, Swi6, in the fungal kingdom, while also working on fine-tuning heterochromatin spreading sensor signal resolution using degron-fused fluorescent proteins.Outside of the lab I love playing the guitar, going to concerts, exploring SF neighborhoods, and home-brewing stuff. I am also a big outdoors person and I love skiing and unicycling.
